Toledo Set to Compete in MAC Championships

Toledo, Ohio - The Toledo women's track and field team will compete in the 2018 Mid-American Conference Championships hosted by University at Buffalo this week. Competition runs Thursday-Saturday at University at Buffalo Stadium with day one kicking off at 10:00 a.m.
"I think we had a solid but not complete performance at the MAC indoor championships this year, and I would like to see us equal or improve our placing as a team," head coach Linh Nguyen said. "I'm very excited about the team as a whole. I think we have a lot of potential points in a variety of events. Now, it's up to the team to go out there and execute the way they are capable of doing.
"This part of the season is always exciting," Nguyen added. "They are done with school, the weather is warm, and it's championship season. I think the girls all seem to have a little extra energy and pep in their step. It's a chance to just relax and focus on track and field. I think they're focused, with plenty of time for recovery and no distractions, and I hope they carry that energy and focus into the championship."
The Rockets head to New York with 15 automatic qualifiers and 22 student-athletes ranked top-10 in their respective events.
UT is led by a strong core of distance runners; eleven of Toledo's top-ranked student athletes are long-haulers. Leading the pack is senior Janelle Noe, who is expected to run the 1,500m. Noe's 4:18.56 is ranked second in the MAC and 33rd in the NCAA. Behind her is senior Petronela Simiuc, who competes in the 1,500m and 800m. Simiuc ranks fifth in the conference and 67th in the nation in the 1,500m (4:20.99). She also has the 14th-best time in the conference in the 800m (2:12.88).
Near the top of the 3,000 steeplechase rankings are sophomore Athena Welsh, senior Stephanie Barlow and junior Olivia Chinn. Welsh's 10:22.70 sits second in the conference and 54th in the nation. Barlow is right behind, her 10:26.48 earning her fourth in the conference and 71st in the nation. Chinn rounds out the group with a 10:44.14 to take fifth in the MAC.
Toledo's field athletes have also been turning in top performances. Freshman Karoline Steppin sits in the top-15 of the MAC in three events heading into the championships. Steppin is ranked fourth in the triple jump (12.23m), 10th in the long jump (5.81m), and 13th in the javelin (39.09m). Alongside her is junior Katie Dewey who holds two conference top-10 marks. Dewey sits seventh in the discus thanks to her 47.92m mark, and eighth in the shot put with her 15.08m mark.
Last year at the MACs
Toledo finished in sixth place with 63 points at last year's MAC Outdoor Championships. It was a 17-point improvement over the previous season, and the first time in three years that the program didn't finish in seventh. The Rockets earned eight top-five finishes over the week.
