TOLEDO, OHIO - Toledo (15-10, 6-7 MAC) returns to the hardwood on Saturday, Feb. 17 against Western Michigan (14-11, 7-6 MAC) looking to sweep the season series with the Broncos for the fourth consecutive year. Game time is slated for 2:00 p.m. in Savage Arena and will be streamed live on ESPN3.
UT downed WMU in the first meeting this season, 78-73, on Jan. 31 in University Arena.
In conjunction with Saturday's game, Toledo will hold its 12th-annual 'Rockets for the Cure' day. The event will help benefit the Susan G. Komen for the Cure of Northwest Ohio, the Eleanor N. Dana Cancer Center and the University of Toledo Center for Health and Successful Living. The Rockets encourage everyone in attendance to wear pink in support of cancer research.
Last season, the Rockets raised $10,488 for cancer research, marking the eighth-straight season they collected at least $10,000. In addition, nine of UT's uniforms that were auctioned off after the game went for more than $500.00, including a high of $700.00 for junior
Kaayla McIntyre and sophomore Mariella Santucci.
Toledo is currently tied with Eastern Michigan (10-14, 6-7 MAC) for seventh place in the overall Mid-American Conference standings with five regular-season contests remaining. Unfortunately for the Rockets, they do not own the tiebreaker with the Eagles, as they lost the head-to-head meeting against their division foe earlier this year, 70-57, in Ypsilanti (Jan. 6). If the regular season ended before Saturday's division match-up, UT would be the No. 8 seed in the MAC Tournament and host No. 9 seed Northern Illinois (13-11, 5-8 MAC) in a first-round match-up on Monday, March 5. The top four seeds receive an automatic bye to the quarterfinals of the postseason event.
The Rockets will be looking to rebound from three-consecutive losses against Buffalo (84-73), Miami (67-58) and most recently Central Michigan (85-47). One of the contributing factors for UT's losing skid is its inability to defend. Toledo allowed its three opponents to shoot a combined 48.0 percent (95-of-198) from the field, including 41.9 percent (18-of-43) from beyond the arc, and average 78.7 ppg during the losing streak.
In last Saturday's loss to the MAC West Division leading Chippewas, senior
Jay-Ann Bravo-Harriott led UT with 14 points, followed closely by redshirt freshman Tanaya Beacham and McIntyre with 12 each.
Tinara Moore paced a balanced CMU attack with 22 points, while Cassie Breen, Presley Hudson, Micaela Kelly and Kyra Bussell contributed 14, 13, 10 and 10, respectively.
The MAC's top-scoring offense lived up to its billing, shooting 54.7 percent (35-of-64) from the floor, including 46.7 percent (7-of-15) from beyond the arc. CMU did a majority of its damage on the interior and finished with a 48-22 advantage in points in the paint. The home team also posted a decisive 50-33 edge on the glass, led by Kelly and Moore with a game-high 10 and eight rebounds, respectively.
Toledo continues to be fueled offensively by the trio of McIntyre, Bravo-Harriott and junior
Mikaela Boyd, who are averaging 15.1, 11.9 and 11.9 ppg, respectively.
UT, which is 9-2 in home games this year, will face a WMU squad coming off an 81-71 setback against Ball State last Saturday. All-MAC performer Breanna Mobley led three Broncos in double figures with 25 points and nine caroms. Deja Wimby added 16 points, a game-high seven helpers and three thefts, while Najee Smith had 11 points.
Western Michigan, which is 6-8 in games away from home, features three players scoring at least 10.0 ppg and is led by Mobley's 16.3 ppg and 8.7 rpg.
Toledo leads the all-time series, 56-21, and has won the last eight contests against its division rival. UT also holds a 28-8 advantage in games played in Savage Arena. A year ago, the Rockets claimed a 75-67 home triumph (Feb. 25).
Western Michigan's last victory against Toledo occurred on Feb. 23, 2014 when it escaped Lucas County with a 60-59 road triumph.
Following Saturday's contest, Toledo will host Eastern Michigan on Wednesday, Feb. 21. Game time versus the Eagles is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. in Savage Arena and will be streamed live on ESPN3.
UT and EMU will meet for the second time this year and 82nd time overall. The Rockets dropped a 70-57 road decision against the Eagles on Jan. 6 in the Convocation Center.
Toledo leads the all-time series, 48-33, but has lost five of the eight contests against its division rival. UT also holds a 26-12 advantage in games played in Savage Arena.
A year ago, Toledo claimed a 65-57 home triumph (Feb. 22).
In conjunction with Wednesday's division match-up against EMU, Toledo will host the inaugural Rockets' Wine Night. Heidelberg Distributing will feature 12 of their most popular wines in the Fetterman Practice Gym beginning at 5:30 p.m.
