DADE CITY, Fla. – No. 3 seed Toledo split six matches against No. 1 seed Miami in the championship match, but lost the tiebreaker in Ball State's seventh-annual Earl Yestingsmeier Match Play tournament on Tuesday. The tournament was held at the par-72, 7,153-yard Lake Jovita South Golf Course.
"Our team continues to make competitive improvements and match play helped to accelerate that process," first-year Head Coach Jeff Roope said. "Competing against a program of Miami's caliber today was a litmus test of where we are and where we desire to be. The guys should feel good about their finish and hungry for the next event."
Sophomore Thomas Thurloway, senior Colin Joseph and junior Spencer Shoemaker recorded the Rockets' victories against the RedHawks. Thurloway posted a 1-up win at No. 1, Joseph notched a 4&2 triumph at No. 5, and Shoemaker captured a 1-up victory at No. 6. Shoemaker and Thurloway led UT during the two-day event with perfect 3-0 records.
Toledo is now idle until traveling to the Bayou State for the Louisiana Classics in Lafayette, La. on Monday-Tuesday, Feb. 26-27.
