Rockets Sweep Weekend with 2-0 Win Over Chippewas
10/7/2018 3:56:00 PM | Women's Soccer
Toledo, Ohio - The Toledo women's soccer team (8-5-1, 4-2-0 MAC) posted a 2-0 shutout of Central Michigan (5-9-0, 3-3-0 MAC) today, giving the Rockets their first back-to-back victories since the start of September and establishing a three-match winning streak. Sophomore Alex Troy netted her third of the season, and senior captain Hannah Scafaria notched her 13th.
Â
Scafaria's goal puts her in third place for most goals in a single season at UT. Two more and she'll tie for the most with Molly Cornwell (2007) and Corrie Hasenjager (2000).
Â
"It feels great to get a team win honestly. I'm so happy to get a fourth MAC win and I want to keep going," Scafaria said. "We have five games left and I think we have a lot more to show. To get these two wins this weekend is huge and that was our goal going in and was the turning point of our season. Like I said, we have a lot more to show and I can't wait for the rest of the season to come."
Â
"I thought we had an overall great team performance starting from the back line," head coach TJ Buchholz said. "Central is an explosive team, and you can never take your eye off their top forward (Lexi Pelafas) because she's so relentless. Our team did a such an awesome job at neutralizing here. I'm really proud of our defense in Madison Perrin ,Rachelle Topolewski, Sheridan Bufe, Regan Price and Betsy Lueck coming through. On the offensive side, our girls were great and created so many opportunities. Their keeper had a wonderful game and showed awesome effort. We kept getting in behind them and she kept up with save after save so I'm really proud of our team's persistence and to get that late second half goal from Hannah showed a great team effort."
Â
How it happened
The Rockets jumped on the attack early on with two quick shots at the net from Troy and Scafaria in the opening three minutes. Central Michigan's Lexi Pelafas took a chance in the ninth minute but the shot went high.
Â
UT got on the board in the 23rd minute when senior captain Alena Sidwell ran a ball down the right sideline and played in a low cross. Troy found the skidding ball and tapped it past CMU goalkeeper Brianna Wallbridge to put UT up 1-0.
Â
The Rockets controlled the attack after that, keeping the Chippewas away from the net while only allowing one attempt at net. Toledo put five more chances toward net but nothing found the net for the remainder of the first period.
Â
Toledo kept the pressure on going into the second period. Sophomore Sophia Lewis tested Wallbridge a minute into the half but the shot was saved. Troy and Scafaria came back in the 48th and 51st minutes but both shots went wide.
Â
The Rockets continued to send in volleys but every opportunity was either blocked by the CMU defense or saved by Wallbridge.
Â
The Chippewas picked up their tempo in the final 10 minutes of the game but UT didn't falter, cutting dangerous run-ins and passes.
Â
Toledo's final goal of the day came four seconds before the final whistle. Lewis played a through ball past the CMU back line and Scafaria chipped the keeper to wrap things up.
