Akron, Ohio - The Toledo women's soccer team (8-8-2, 4-5-1 MAC) fell 1-0 to Akron (7-9-2, 4-5-1 MAC) today in UT's penultimate match of the regular-season. Toledo put up eight shots (three on goal) in the match but was unable to find the back of the net.
"It is a tough loss, but credit to Akron for playing a great game," head coach TJ Buchholz said. "We will have to find a way to bounce back and be ready for a strong Bowling Green team."
How it happened:
The Rockets started on the attack, keeping the ball in their attacking third throughout the opening minutes. UT had a solid chance on net in the 40th minute when sophomore Sophia Lewis sent in a cross that was meant for senior captain Hannah Scafaria but Zips goalkeeper Erin McKinney fought off.
The 26th minute saw a few chances open up for both Akron and Toledo. The Zips won a free kick that almost resulted in a slotted goal by Abigail Brown but the shot went wide. UT followed with a quick-building counter where Alex Troy sent in a through ball to Scafaria but the UA defense shut down the setup.
UT drew a free kick in a dangerous area at the top of the 18-yard box with 11 minutes to go in the half. The resulting chance was a laser that sophomore goalkeeper Madison Perrin tipped over the crossbar to keep the score 0-0.
Akron won three corners following the chance and the UT defense was able to fight off each of them, with Perrin flying up and punching away the final kick in.
As the halftime whistle blew, the score remained 0-0. Akron out-shot UT 4-2 in the opening half and recorded six corners to Toledo's one.
Ten minutes into the second half, senior captain Alena Sidwell ran up the right touch line and sent in ball for Lewis. Lewis got a head to it but the ball went wide of the net.
Akron opened scoring moments later thanks to Sydney Worthy. Worthy headed a ball through the legs of Perrin to put her side up 1-0.
The Zips almost got on the board again with 18 minutes left to go when Shea O'Brien took a shot from 25 yards out. The shot was dipping into the corner but Perrin was able to tip the shot away from her goal.
UT fought hard into the dying moments of the match but was unable to find the back of the net on four-straight chances.
