Buffalo, N.Y. - The Toledo women's soccer team (8-7-2, 4-4-1 MAC) fell 1-0 in double overtime to Buffalo (11-5-0, 5-4-0 MAC) today in the Rockets' third to last match of the regular season. UT put up solid chances but couldn't set up many scoring opportunities, dropping the contest in the 101st minute off a UB header.
Sophomore goalkeeper Madison Perrin made a season-high nine saves today but her efforts weren't enough to keep Toledo in it.
"We played hard, but we just didn't get in a great rhythm on the offensive side," head coach TJ Buchholz said. "Both teams played strong defensively and Buffalo was able to finally score on us on a corner kick. It is a tough loss, but we have to bounce back against a good Akron team on Sunday."
How it happened
The Bulls jumped on the attack early on and forced UT's back line to stay active. Buffalo put up five shots in the opening 30 minutes and kept UT's strikers away from goal, allowing only one shot to go up throughout the whole first half.
The second half opened in similar fashion to the first with UB attackers taking eight shots in the first 15 minutes. Perrin stood tall between the pipes for UT though and made five saves in that same time period to keep things even at 0-0. Senior captain Alena Sidwell and sophomore Sophia Lewis each tested UB goalkeeper Emily Kelly toward the end of the period. Kelly saved a shot off of each UT player but the score remained even as time expired.
The first period of overtime saw few chances from both sides. Buffalo's Gurjeena Jandu and Marcy Barberic worked Perrin in the 94th minute and 99th minutes, respectively. UT senior captain Hannah Scafaria put a chance up in the 99th minute as well that Kelly handled, sending the match to the final period of OT.
The Bulls won the match one minute into the second overtime period. UB won a corner that Jandu sent in. Hannah Callaghan settled the ball and took a rip that bounced off the post, but UB's Gianna Yurchak was able to follow up with a header that slipped past Perrin, securing the victory.
