ROME, Italy – After visiting the ancient Roman Colisseum and Forum earlier in the day, Toledo opened its foreign tour on Friday evening with an 88-69 victory over Serbian club team KK Kolubara. Junior guard Jaelan Sanford tallied a team-high 20 points and all 13 Rockets who played found the scoring column.
"We started both halves really well and this win was a good way for us to start our trip," Head Coach Tod Kowalczyk said. "We tried to get everyone on the team playing time, and I think that prevented us from getting into a real good flow. The mistakes we did make were mostly mental or caused by miscommunication and are things we can learn from."
Toledo scored the first 10 points of the contest before settling for a 43-40 halftime advantage. The Rockets then took control of the contest with a dominating third quarter that resulted in a 66-50 cushion heading into the final stanza.
Joining Sanford in double digits was junior forward Nate Navigato (15 pts.), junior forward Taylor Adway (12 pts.) and with sophomore center Luke Knapke (11 pts.). Sanford converted 8-of-11 shots from the field, while Knapke knocked down all four of his field-goal attempts, including three treys.
Knapke also grabbed a team-best five boards with five other Rockets registering three or more rebounds apiece.
"We're very happy to get this win," junior guard Jaelan Sanford said. "We passed the ball, moved the ball well and had a lot of fun out there. I can't wait to get back out on the court again tomorrow night."
UT's rematch against KK Kolubara will tip off at 6:00 p.m. on Saturday. The Rockets' remaining contests will be played on Monday, Aug. 14 and Wednesday, Aug. 16 near the cities of Florence and Venice, respectively.
