TOLEDO, Ohio – Toledo recorded a 5-2 victory over Northern Illinois on Saturday afternoon at the UT Varsity Tennis Courts. With their second-straight conference win, the Rockets improve to 10-12 overall and 2-3 in the Mid-American Conference.
UT got a head start on the Huskies by claiming wins at second and third doubles. On Court 2, sophomores Vince Anzalone and Serjen Olmedo recorded a 6-4 victory over their competition, while freshman Thawin Suksathaporn and sophomore Reid Teatsorth claimed a 7-6 (5) win on Court 3.
"Today was another full-team effort," said head coach Al Wermer. "Everybody bounced back well from yesterday and we really brought the heat. I am really proud of the effort Stjepan brought to today's match. He was dominant today, as he has been so many times in his career"
The Midnight Blue & Gold continued its momentum from the doubles competition into singles play and recorded straight-set victories on courts one through four.
Senior Stjepan Sisko took his usual post at the top of the lineup and bested Bor Muzar, 6-3, 6-2. Following suit, Anzalone defeated Georg Lundkvist, 6-4, 6-2 on Court 2, and sophomore Luka Vitosevic downed Eric Marbach, 6-1, 7-6 (3), at third singles. Junior Omar Espinosa closed out the Rocket tally with a 6-3, 6-4 win over NIU's Tom Hjertonsson at No. 4 singles.
The Rockets will hit the courts again on Saturday, April 15 when they travel to Vestal, NY to take on Binghamton.
