UT put together a game-changing 12-2 run over the course of the first and second periods to sweep the regular-season series against the reigning MAC Tournament champion Bulls (15-6, 5-5 MAC). The Rockets also claimed a 73-64 road triumph at UB on Jan. 11 in Alumni Arena.
The Midnight Blue & Gold trailed 12-11 with 51 seconds left in the first quarter before going on the game-changing burst. Four different players tallied points in the rally to give the home team a lead they would not relinquish.
Senior Janice Monakana paced three Rockets in double figures with a career-high 29 points and in the process became the 26th player in school history to reach the 1,000-career point plateau. The victors also received seven points from freshman Mariella Santucci, as well as five each from junior Jay-Ann Bravo-Harriott, sophomore Halee Printz and sophomore Olivia Cunningham to top the 80-point plateau for the third time this year.
As a team, the Rockets shot a MAC-season high 52.0 percent (26-of-50) from the field, including 35.7 percent (5-of-14) from three-point land, and a season-best 84.8 percent (28-of-33) from the charity stripe to improve to 11-0 all-time against UB at home.
UT was also dominate on the boards and held a convincing 44-34 edge, as well as totaling a 21-10 advantage in assists. The Bulls entered tonight's MAC cross-division match-up leading the league in rebounding margin (+8.5).
Stephanie Reid led Buffalo with 24 points, six assists and a contest-best four steals. Reid was the only visitor in double figures. UB's leading scorer and MAC Player of the Year candidate, JoAnn Smith, was limited to six points on 1-of-17 shooting from the floor, including 0-of-10 from beyond the arc. Smith came into tonight's game averaging 16.4 points.
The Bulls were stymied by Toledo's defense all evening and restricted to a season-low 31.4 percent (22-of-70) from the field, including an even better 16.7 percent (4-of-24) from three-point land.
UT looked good at the outset and benefited from an early 9-3 run to open up an 11-8 lead at the 3:00 mark.
UB quickly retaliated with four consecutive points before Toledo went on the game-changing rally to stretch its margin to 23-14 with 5:36 left in the second period. The Midnight Blue & Gold did all the damage on the interior, receiving a pair of layups from both McIntyre and Santucci, as well as close-range shots from senior Sophie Reecher and Boyd.
Buffalo momentarily stopped UT's momentum after Theresa Onwuka split a pair of free throws, but the home team responded with another clutch 16-8 run to make it double-digit difference, 39-23, at the intermission. Monakana sparked the late rally with seven points to give Toledo a 16-point cushion at the break.
The Rockets shot a sizzling 10-of-14 shots in the second quarter, including nailing both of their three-point field-goal attempts in the second 10 minutes.
Buffalo would not go quietly though, and started the third period on fire, scoring the first eight points to close within 39-31 at the 7:57 mark. The visitors received points from three different players to cut the margin in half.
Toledo needed a quick response to Buffalo's run to calm its nerves, and Monakana delivered in a big way with a pair of free throws and a triple to push the lead back to double figures, 44-31, with 7:09 left in the period.
Monakana's points were just what the doctor ordered, helping the Rockets reestablish total control of the contest.
The London, England native continued her dominance from there and scored 10 of UT's next 13 points to make the difference, 62-45, at the 8:20 mark in the fourth quarter. The 2015-16 honorable mention All-MAC selection was credited with three field goals and three charity tosses during this span to put the game out of reach.
The Rockets will return to the hardwood on Saturday, Feb. 4 when they travel to MAC East Division frontrunner Ohio (16-5, 7-3 MAC). The opening tip versus the Bobcats is slated for 3:00 p.m. in the Convocation Center.
UT and Ohio will meet for the second time in two weeks and 68th time overall. The Bobcats secured a 64-55 road victory on Jan. 18 in Savage Arena.
Two years ago, UT dropped a 65-58 road decision versus Ohio (Jan. 10, 2015).
