PEORIA, Ill. - Senior Titus Koech ran to a 49th-place finish to lead the Rockets to a 19th-place team finish in the Bradley Pink Classic on Friday evening.
Koech was the first Rocket to cross the finish line, stopping the clock at 25:40.3. This was Koech's second sub-26:00.0 8k of the season (25:54.1, ISU Invite).
Freshman Daniel Kemboi stepped up in a big way, finishing 93rd with a collegiate-best 8k time of 26:23.4. Kemboi bested his previous best of 28:14.2 in the Griak Invitational by nearly two minutes.
Juniors Josh Oeters and Brian Stubelt raced to 113th place and 124th place, respectively. Oeters clocked in at 26:37.3, while Stubelt was just off the pace at 26:45.9.
Freshman Ben Williams rounded out the UT scoring with a 143rd-place mark. This marks Williams' first top five finish on the team in his collegiate career. His time of 27:06.7 was also a career-best at Toledo.
"This was our last tuneup before the MAC Championships in two weeks," said Toledo assistant coach Sam Bluske. "We got buried in the large field at the start, but I thought we did a solid job working our way through the race."
Iowa's Nathan Mylenek won the race in 24:26.2 and led the Hawkeyes to a team victory with 84 points.
"We have two weeks until it really counts," said Bluske. "I think we walk away today with some valuable experience that will help us in the conference meet."
The rest of the men's cross country team competes tomorrow (Oct. 14) in the NCAA Pre-Nationals in Louisville, Ky.
