TOLEDO, OH – Toledo dropped a 64-55 decision against Ohio on Wednesday in Mid-American Conference action before 3,594 spectators in Savage Arena. With the loss, the Rockets fall to 12-5 overall, 3-3 in the league.
Sophomore Kaayla McIntyre paced UT with 11 points and three thefts in a career-high 34 minutes. The Toledo native shot 5-of-9 from the floor and 1-of-3 from the free throw line to score in double digits for the third-straight game and sixth time in the last eight contests. McIntyre was the only Rocket in double figures.
Toledo's next highest scorers were the trio of senior Janice Monakana, junior Jada Woody and freshman Mariella Santucci with seven points each.
As a team, UT was limited to 31.0 percent (18-of-58) from the field, including 33.3 percent (5-of-15) from three-point range, and 70.0 percent (14-of-20) from the charity stripe to suffer back-to-back losses for the first time this year. Back on Saturday, Toledo lost to Northern Illinois, 77-73, at home.
UT's final point total and overall field-goal percentage were its second-lowest marks on the season.
Quiera Lampkins paced the MAC East Division leading Bobcats (13-4, 4-2 MAC) in points (26), caroms (10) and helpers (5) to propel the visitors to only their second win in Savage Arena since Jan. 7, 1987.
For the second-straight game, the Rockets started slow and found themselves down early, 9-3, at the 5:07 mark. They missed six of their first seven shots from the field and were guilty of four miscues in the opening four-plus minutes of action.
UT responded admirably following the media timeout and went on an 11-2 run to assume a 14-11 advantage with 2:29 left in the first quarter. Sophomore Mikaela Boyd and McIntyre sparked the early burst with four points each to turn a six-point deficit into a three-point lead.
Ohio was quick to retaliate though, scoring 14 of the next 17 points to claim an eight-point cushion, 25-17, with 8:54 remaining in the half. Lampkins accounted for seven points in the rally to help give the visitors a lead they would not surrender.
The Rockets momentarily stopped Ohio's momentum with back-to-back field goals from sophomore Sarah St-Fort and Woody, but they could sustain it and went almost five minutes without another point. As a result of that dry spell, the Midnight Blue & Gold trailed 32-26 at the intermission.
UT needed a boost to close the margin in the opening moments of the third period and received it from McIntyre and Woody to set the score at 36-35 at the 5:13 mark. McIntyre converted a pair of layups, while Woody drained her second triple on the evening and split a pair of charity tosses to make it a one-point contest.
Like a heavyweight championship fight, the Bobcats responded with a 14-5 run to stretch the margin to 50-40 after 30 minutes of competition. Once again, it was Lampkins who triggered the rally with seven points to provide the visitors with a double-digit cushion.
Toledo would not go down without a fight though, and scored 11 of the first 13 points to pull within a single point, 52-51, with 4:05 left in regulation. Monakana accounted for all but two of the points in the late spurt to make it a one-possession contest and bring the home crowd to its feet.
Unfortunately for the Rockets, they went scoreless for the next 3:26 and mustered only four points the rest of the night, while Ohio registered 12 to make the final score, 64-55.
Toledo will return to action on Saturday, Jan. 21 when it travels to Kent State (9-9, 3-3 MAC). The opening tip versus the Golden Flashes is slated for 4:00 p.m. in the M.A.C. Center.
UT and KSU will square for the only time during the 2017 MAC season and the 70th time overall. Toledo leads the all-time series, 41-28, and has won the last eight meetings against its intrastate foe.
A year ago, Toledo swept the regular-season series against Kent State, securing a 73-67 home triumph (Jan. 6) and a 67-64 road victory (Feb. 6).
