Akron, OH – The University of Toledo softball team managed just two hits in its 7-0 loss to sixth-seeded Akron on Thursday evening. With the loss, the Rockets are eliminated from the Mid-American Conference Tournament and finish their 2016 season with an overall record of 21-34.
Second-team All-MAC selection, Erin Seiler (25-18), did not give up a hit until the fifth inning and recorded the victory over the Rockets.
Akron's leadoff batter slammed a home run to give the Zips a quick 1-0 lead in the first. Senior OF Jessica Lemieux nearly answered back with a homer of her own but it was caught at the fence by the Zips' right fielder.
The Zips added another run in the second inning on a Rocket error and then extended their lead in the fifth with a two-run double to left field.
Junior 3B Brittany George recorded Toledo's first hit in the bottom of the fifth with a single down the left line, however, the Rockets could not capitalize.
Freshman Heather Webb (2 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 2 BB) replaced starting pitcher Marla Gooding in the sixth frame. The Zips plated three more runs before Toledo could close out the inning.
Gooding (18-17) re-enterted the game in the seventh for the final inning of her outstanding Rocket career. The senior was tagged with the loss after throwing for five innings. She allowed three earned runs, walked one and struck out two.
