Toledo Places Ninth at Mission Inn Spring Spectacular

HOWIE-IN-THE-HILLS, FL – Toledo finished in ninth place at the Mission Inn Spring Spectacular on Sunday. The two-day tournament took place at the El Campeón Course (Par-72, 6,966 Yards) at the Mission Inn Golf and Tennis Resort and was hosted by George Mason University.
The Rockets fired rounds of 294, 290 and 317 (901 total) over the last two days and trailed team champion No. 18 South Florida (288-280-281=849) by 52 strokes. The Midnight Blue & Gold also finished first among two Mid-American Conference teams, topping Ohio (308-315-299) who tied for 13th place at 58-over par 922.
Individually, senior Otto Black (70-74-79) and sophomore Stephen Watts (70-72-81) led UT at seven-over par 223 to finish in a five-way tie for 26th place.
Sophomore Colin Joseph (78-69-80) finished just four strokes behind Black and Watts at 11-over par 227 to tie for the 43rd spot, followed closely by senior Thomas Shindler (76-75-77) at 12-over par 228 to tie for 45th place. Rounding out Toledo's lineup was freshman Spencer Shoemaker, who tallied a nine-over par 81 in the first round but was forced to withdraw from the event in the second round.
In addition, freshmen Jamie Knipe and Cameron Mills competed as individuals in Toledo's second event this spring. Knipe (76-84-79) stood at 23-over par 239 to finish tied for 77th spot, while Mills was forced to withdraw in the today's third round after shooting rounds of 82 and 81 on Saturday.
Individually, USF's Chase Koepka (70-67-70) captured medalist honors at nine-under par 207 to post a decisive five-stroke victory over runner-ups USC-Upstate's Ryan Cornfield (71-72-69) and teammate Rigel Fernandes (69-74-69) at four-under par 212.
The Rockets will return to the links on Friday-Sunday, March 25-27 at the FAU Slomin Autism Invite in Lake Worth, FL.
