East Lansing, MI – Toledo men's tennis was defeated 6-1 by the Michigan State Spartans on Monday afternoon in East Lansing. The Rockets drop to 0-2 on the season, while MSU improves to a record of 1-1.
Â
The only Rocket victory came from one of the six Toledo freshmen. Luka Vitosevic defeated Mac Roy 6-7, 6-4, 10-4 at No. 2 singles.
Â
Freshmen Vince Anzalone, Serjen Olmedo and Juan Carranza were all defeated in tie-breaking sets. Anzalone lost 6-7, 3-6 at the No. 3 spot, Olmedo lost 2-6, 6-7 at No. 5 and Carranza fell 6-7, 3-6 in the No. 6 slot.
Â
"We lost three singles tie-breakers simultaneously and I think we could have had a big momentum flip if they had gone differently," said head coach Al Wermer. "Other than that, I think we played much more relaxed and competed far better than we did two days ago against Purdue."
Â
Sophomores Omar Espinosa and Stephen Miller were defeated at No. 1 and No. 4 singles, respectively.
Â
In doubles action, Anzalone and freshman Reid Teatsorth fought a hard battle at the No. 3 spot but were eventually defeated 6-5.
Â
The two other Rocket doubles teams both lost by a margin of 6-3.
Â
UT travels to Indiana for a match against Valparaiso on Jan. 23 at 2:00 p.m. The following day, the Rockets will match up against Big Ten's Ohio State in Columbus, OH at 6:00 p.m.
