TOLEDO, OH — The National Collegiate Athletic Association announced on Thursday that senior Jennifer Elsholz is the Mid-American Conference's nominee for the 2014-15 NCAA Woman of the Year award. As part of this announcement, the NCAA announced the additional conference and independent nominees for its 17th annual Woman of the Year award. Nominees are selected based on service and leadership activities, academic achievement, athletics excellence, and a personal statement describing benefits she has gained from her experience as a student-athlete.
The Top 10 winners per division will be announced in August and then narrowed to the Top 3 winners per division in September. The Woman of the Year will be announced at an awards dinner in Indianapolis on October 27.
Elsholz graduated with a degree in psychology in May while posting a 3.61 grade-point average. Elsholz spent her career at UT participating in a variety of community service positions. She served as president of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and donated her time at That Neighborhood Church, McTigue Elementary School and Ronald McDonald House.
"Jennifer was the ultimate student-athlete," head coach Nicole Hollingsworth said. "Her leadership abilities and commitment were at the highest level I have seen in my 18 years as a head coach. She also volunteered in the community more than I have ever seen from a student-athlete. When you talk about a total person, Jennifer Elsholz is that."
A senior from Grand Rapids, MI, Elsholz ranked third for the Rockets with a 77.6 stroke average this past spring. She posted a season-best fourth-place finish at Michigan State's Mary Fossum Invitational to earn MAC Women's Golfer of the Week accolades. The Grand Rapids, MI native notched two more Top 10 showings during the year – tied for 10th place at both the Rocket Classic and FGCU Eagle Invitational - and helped UT win a pair of tournament titles.
The NCAA Woman of the Year award was established in 1991 to celebrate the achievements of women in college athletics, and honors female student-athletes based not only on their success in athletics, but in academics, leadership and community service as well.
