
Harvard Pulls Away from Toledo Late at URI Tip-Off Classic, 76-70

KINGSTON, RI – Toledo suffered a tough 76-70 loss against Harvard on Sunday in the consolation round of the URI Tip-Off Classic in the Thomas M. Ryan Center. With the setback, UT falls to 0-4 on the season.
In a neutral-court match-up that featured nine ties and 10 lead changes, the Crimson (2-2) outscored the Rockets 24-18 in the fourth quarter to keep the Midnight Blue & Gold winless on the season.
Senior Ana Capotosto led Toledo with 14 points and seven rebounds, en route to being named to the All-Tournament Team. Capotosto was one of two Rockets to score in double figures in both contests this weekend, averaging a squad-best 12.5 ppg.
Sophomore Jay-Ann Bravo-Harriott added 13 points and junior Janice Monakana had 10 in a losing effort. The Rockets also received nine points each from senior Brenae Harris and sophomore Jada Woody.
As a team, UT shot 40.3 percent (27-of-67) from the field, including 44.4 percent (8-of-18) from three-point range, and a perfect 8-of-8 from the charity stripe.
AnnMarie Healy paced Harvard with a game-high 20 points in only 19 minutes. Healy, who sat most of the first half due to foul trouble, was dominate in the final 20 minutes and scored 16 points after the intermission to help her team record their second win on the year.
Madeline Raster chipped in 16 points and Kit Metoyer and Shilpa Tummala tallied 10 points each for the victors.
Harvard was locked in at the start, knocking down seven of its first 10 shots from the field to claim a 16-13 lead at the 3:29 mark. The Crimson's Metoyer and Raster each tallied five points during the opening six-plus minutes to give the home team a three-point advantage.
UT kept the game close on the strength of strong play from Monakana and Woody at the outset. The duo combined to score 10 points in the opening quarter and put the Midnight Blue & Gold within one point, 19-18.
Woody remained on-fire shooting the ball to begin the second period, hitting a trey and a layup to put Toledo in the lead, 24-23, with 8:47 left before intermission. The Canton, MI native accounted for nine points in only 10 minutes off the bench to give the visitors a one-point advantage.
Woody's strong play inspired her teammates and ignited a mini 16-11 run to create a 35-32 edge at the break. Five different players scored in the late rally, including a pair of deep jumpers by freshman Halee Printz, to put Toledo in front by three points at halftime.
Woody and Printz helped the Rocket bench outscore Harvard's reserves 20-9 in the opening 20 minutes.
Bravo-Harriott and Capotosto each buried three-point field goals to start the third quarter to make the score 45-41 at the 6:15 mark.
Capotosto was a one-person wrecking crew in the period and at one time scored eight straight points, as the teams were tied 52-52 at the end of 30 minutes of competition.
Unfortunately for UT, Harvard tallied the first six points to start the final period and forced the Rockets into calling a timeout with 7:16 showing on the clock. Healy scored the first two baskets and Raster accounted for the other to give the Crimson a lead they would not relinquish.
The Crimson's Healy continued to play at a high level as the fourth period wore on, scoring 14 of her team's first 18 points to build a 70-64 advantage with 2:16 left.
UT frantically made one final push in the waning moments and closed the gap to one point, 71-70, with 23.9 seconds left. Toledo took advantage of baskets from Capotosto, Bravo-Harriott and Harris to make it a one-possession game but could not get any closer.
The Rockets were forced to foul, and Harvard made five of its final six free throws to seal the neutral-court victory.
Albany won the two-day tourney, defeating host Rhode Island, 67-58, in today's championship game.
The Rockets will remain on the road and travel to St. Bonaventure on Sunday, Nov. 29. The opening tip against the Atlantic-10 member Bonnies is slated for 1:00 p.m. in the Reilly Center.
