BRIDGEPORT, WV – Toledo finds itself tied for sixth place at the inaugural Mountaineer Intercollegiate following the opening 18 holes on Monday. The two-day event is being played at the Pete Dye Golf Club (Par-72, 7,353 Yards).
The Rockets shot 13-over par 301 in today's opening round to stand tied with Marshall in the team rankings. UT is a mere seven strokes out of the top spot and only four shots from falling into 11th place.
Nationally ranked Penn State is leading the 14-team field at six-over par 294. The Nittany Lions have three players situated in the Top 15 to maintain a one-shot advantage over second-place Connecticut at seven-over par 295.
Individually, senior Otto Black is pacing the Midnight Blue & Gold at two-under par 70 and sits in a three-way tie for second place. The three-time All-MAC honoree was outstanding over the course of today's opening round, recording four birdies and two bogeys. Black has now shot under par on a team-high eight occasions this fall.
Sophomore Stephen Watts is the next top Rocket at three-over par 75 to stand tied for 23rd place. Freshman Mike Lee and Spencer Shoemaker are deadlocked at six-over par 78 to be tied for 46th place, while sophomore Colin Joseph shot nine-over par 81 to stand tied for 72nd place.
Marshall's Clark Robinson is the individual leader in the clubhouse after today's first round at three-under par 69, one shot ahead of UT's Black.
Due to weather concerns, changes have been made to the format of the two-day event. Players will return to the course for the final 18 holes tomorrow. Teams will tee off in a shotgun start at an adjusted start time of 9:00 a.m. The Rockets will play with Cincinnati, Marshall and Missouri during Tuesday's final round of the inaugural event.
