CHICAGO, IL - The Toledo women's tennis team won its second-straight match on Saturday, defeating South Dakota State 5-2 in the Windy City.
"We did a great job keeping the momentum going after a big win yesterday," graduate assistant coach James Thorp said. "SDSU played some good doubles and we showed excellent composure coming from behind to dig out the point. I was very impressed by the way we came out in singles. We were able to keep the pressure on and close out the match nicely. This weekend was a great start for our program and we are excited to build on these wins as we head into three big matches next weekend."
The Rockets jumped ahead of the Jackrabbits 1-0 by claiming the doubles point with wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles.
Senior Lexy Pitt and junior Emily Mazzola teamed up at the No. 2 doubles spot for a hard fought 7-5 victory after saving three match points.
The junior duo of Mackenzie Bowman and Katelyn Nguyen also won at No. 3 doubles by the score of 6-3.
SDSU tied the match up with a win in the top singles spot, but the Midnight Blue & Gold captured the next four singles points to clinch the victory for Toledo.
Senior Pia Rygh secured a win in No. 2 singles in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4, while Pitt, sophomore Lauren Thai and Nguyen won at No. 3, No. 4 and No. 5 singles, respectively.
Pitt, Thai and Nguyen are each now 2-0 following the first two matches this season, while Mazzola and Pitt also hold a 2-0 record in doubles play.
The Rockets will have three matches next weekend, including their home opener on Friday, Jan. 30 against DePaul.
The following day, Toledo will welcome West Virginia to the Glass City. Friday's match will be held at Shadow Valley Tennis Club on Holland-Sylvania, and Saturday's match will move to Shadow Valley on Central Avenue. Both contests are scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m.
On Sunday, Feb. 1, the Midnight Blue & Gold will hit the road to take on Michigan State to conclude the weekend action.
