Cleveland, OH - The Toledo women's tennis team came up short in its second competition of the weekend, falling to Cleveland State on the road, 4-3. It was the second match in a row that UT had to play down a player due to an injury, and it may have been the deciding factor.
The Rockets (2-4, 0-0 MAC) picked up wins in No. 1 doubles as well as Nos. 1, 3 and 4 singles, but gave CSU wins in No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles by default.
UT's Kelsey Anonsen and Lexy Pitt defeated Bjerrehus/Lazaris in No. 1 doubles, 8-6. In singles action, Anonsen and Pitt also won their individual matches in the first- and fourth-spots, respectively. Anonsen defeated Bjerrehus, 6-1, 6-1, while Pitt topped CSU's Power in three sets, 6-7(4), 6-2, 7-6(4). Chrissy Coffman scored Toledo's other singles point, winning in the No. 3 spot over Sherwood, 6-2, 6-1.
"We had some great performances today but it wasn't enough to pick up the win," said head coach Tracy Mauntler. "I'm proud of the improvement that Lexy and Chrissy have made over the past couple weeks. They work very hard in practice and things are coming together for them. Kelsey continues to dominate her opponents, which is impressive when she is playing the opposing team's best player each time she steps onto the court."
The Rockets will compete in their fourth-consecutive road match on Saturday, Feb. 25 when they play at Louisville.
