Toledo, OH - The Toledo men's tennis team opened its winter season with a pair of home victories on Friday, Jan. 13, topping Northwestern Ohio 6-1 and Bradley 4-3.
In the first match, UT scored a 6-1 victory over Northwestern Ohio. The doubles team of senior Leo Sarria and freshman Tomas Stillman defeated the Racers' Hager/Rutler team 8-1, while freshman Grant Adams and junior Terence Weigand notched an 8-6 victory in their doubles showdown against Sirimano/Alpa.
UNOH earned a three-set victory in No. 1 singles, but the Rockets won the remaining five matches, all in straight sets. Stillman defeated Rueda 6-2, 6-1 in the No. 2 spot, while Adams won against Aplan in third singles, 6-3, 7-5. Freshman Nick Wong bounced back from a doubles to record to blank Kuwada, 6-0, 6-0. Weigand defeated Rutter by a count of 6-3, 6-2, and sophomore Ben Brocker won his match against Hayes, 6-0, 6-1.
The evening matchup against Bradley proved to be stiffer competition, but UT was able to raise its energy level and pull out a close 4-3 victory over the Braves.
Sarria and Stillman won their second doubles contest of the day over BU's Townes/Kalhorn combo, 8-2. Junior Bryant Dudzik and Wong bounced back from their earlier loss to top Romanet/Cuadrado 8-6 in second doubles to clinch the doubles point.
The teams split the six singles matches. The Rockets gained wins from Stillman, Weigand and Wong, whose three-set victory in the No. 5 spot clinched the match for the Midnight Blue and Gold. The wins completed an unbeaten day in singles action for these three players.
Stillman defeated Kalhorn in No. 2 singles, 6-2, 6-1. From the No. 6 spot, Weigand beat Romanet, 7-5, 6-0. Wong outlasted BU's Davis, 6-4, 4-6, 7-5.
"Our energy level got better in the second match, but we still need to work on that," said head coach Al Wermer. "I'm not sure if Tomas Stillman has a fan club, but if he does I'm going to be the first member. I was very impressed by him all day. Nick clinched the second match in a three-setter that was a gutsy win.
"As predicted, our freshmen are on a steep learning curve but, overall, I'm excited about seeing everyone on the team make progress this year."
The Rockets travel to South Bend, IN for two matches on Sunday, Jan. 15, as they take on Illinois State at 1 p.m. and Notre Dame at 6 p.m.
