Rockets Drop Matches to Illinois State and Notre Dame

South Bend, IN - The Toledo men's tennis competed in its second day of competition in the winter season on Sunday, Jan. 15, as it competed in separate matches against Illinois State and Notre Dame. UT came up short in both contests, losing to Illinois State 5-2 and being topped by 28th-ranked Notre Dame 7-0.
Against Illinois State, the Rockets (2-2, 0-0 MAC) were only able to nab wins in the No. 1 and No. 5 singles spots. Freshman Tomas Stillman was blanked in the first set of No. 1 singles against ISU's Manner, before taking the next two in a row en route to a 0-6, 6-1, 6-2 win. Junior Terence Weigand pulled out a 6-7, 6-4, 10-8 win over ISU's Appanervanda in fifth singles.
Toledo didn't fare any better in the evening match against Notre Dame, falling by a count of 7-0.
Stillman and senior Leo Sarria had a close match in No. 1 doubles, but ultimately subdued to ND's Watt/Andrews tandem by a count of 8-6. In second doubles, junior Bryant Dudzik and freshman Nick Wong also fell by a score of 8-6, beaten by Bandy/Pecor of Notre Dame.
Each Rocket that competed in singles play was defeated in straight sets.
"We started very slow but built up a fair amount of energy as the day went on," said head coach Al Wermer. "We had our chances vs Illinois State and I'd love a few do-overs on a couple critical points. We had excellent energy against Notre Dame in doubles and really challenged them. Although singles scores look lopsided, Tomas, Bryant, Grant and Nicky gave relentless efforts."
UT will be back in action on Friday, Jan. 20 when the team travels to Chicago, IL to take on DePaul.
