Gold Team Triumphs in Blue-Gold Intra-Squad Meet

Toledo, OH - In the opening action of the 2011-12 swimming and diving season, the Gold team emerged victorious in the Blue-Gold meet Friday at the University of Toledo's Student Recreation Center. Captained by junior LesLee Winfield, the team won 169-106 over Blue, captained by Laura Benevento and Kirsten Smith.

The Gold team set a new pool record in the process, as the 800 medley relay team of Beth Rogers, Claire Leichty, Rachel Johnson and Carly Harter swam a time of 7:40.91.

Going into the intra-squad scrimmage, head coach Liz Hinkleman wanted to mix up her swimmers' events and take a look at areas where different people could excel and where improvement still needs to be made. The meet provided some impressive early-season times, but will still provide the coaches with plenty of teaching points.

"Overall, I thought the team did pretty good," said head coach Liz Hinkleman. "We just need to continue developing people and working on race strategy, but I was pretty impressed with some of the times that got posted today. Across the board, there was a lot of energy and excitement, so I'm proud of the girls."

The Rockets will be back in their home pool on Saturday, Oct. 8 at 10 a.m. for the Alumni Meet and then travel to Bowling Green State University on Friday, Oct. 14 to compete in the Tom Stubbs Relays.
