TOLEDO, OH - Junior Allison Schultz just missed out on defending her Cincinnati Metropolitan Women's Amateur Championship title this week. Schultz lost to Memphis' Marissa Steen in Thursday's championship match, 1-up, at Miami View Club.
"Allison played very well in this event for a second-straight year," Toledo Head Coach Nicole Hollingsworth said. "There are some tremendous collegiate golfers and amateurs in the Cincinnati area, and this is a great accomplishment for Allison."
Schultz was hoping to become the first repeat winner since 1996, but she saw Steen avenge her loss to Schultz in last year's final.
"I feel like I played well from tee to green. But I had a lot of opportunities on the greens where I didn't capitalize," Schultz told Cincinnati.com. "Marissa was so consistent though and that's the key to winning in match play."
Schultz said her undoing came on the par-3 No. 17. The golfers entered the tee box tied, but Steen won with a par. Schultz, whose tee shot left her in the rough about 30 feet from the pin, missed her putt for par.
"That was the difference, missing that five-foot putt," Schultz said. "If I make that putt, we're tied."
Steen birdied two of the final three holes, the par-five No. 16 and par-five No. 18. When she sank the winning putt, Schultz walked over and shook Steen's hand.
Schultz will now head to Ponte Vedra Beach, FA where she will begin play in Saturday's Women's Western Amateur Championship at Sawgrass Country Club.
