
Rockets Post Tight 153-147 Win at Buffalo

Buffalo, NY - Posting first-place finishes in nine events, the Toledo swimming and diving team came away with a close victory in its first Mid-American Conference dual-meet of the season, defeating Buffalo 153-147.
First-place finishes were recorded by senior Claire Leichty in the 1000 freestyle (10:19.08); freshman Maria Bargardi in the 100 backstroke (58.60); junior McKenzie Bagan in the 200 butterfly (2:04.69); sophomore Rachel Johnson in the 200 backstroke (2:04.92); senior Laura Lindsay in the 100 breaststroke (1:02.97) 200 breaststroke (2:17.62); senior Louise Smyth in the 500 freestyle (5:01.95); junior Carly Harter in the 200 IM (2:03.78) and sophomore Beth Rogers in the 100 butterfly (56.09).
Key support was also provided by having additional scorers record top-three finishes in four of those events. Junior Kristen Clemmons placed second in the 1000 freestyle (10:38.19); Johnson was second-place in the 100 backstroke (59.09); Smyth finished third in the 200 butterfly (2:09.27); Bargardi posted a second-place finish in the 200 backstroke (2:06.98); Bagan placed second in the 100 butterfly (56.92) and Leichty finished second-place in the 500 freestyle (5:06.13).
The 200 medley relay team of Bargardi, Lindsay, Bagan and sophomore Beth Rogers placed second with a time of 1:45.54. Similarly, the 400 freestyle relay team of Rogers, junior LesLee Winfield, freshman Jordan VanWinkle and Harter also finished second with a time of 3:32.60.
In one-meter diving, junior Nikki Schropp (247.65), freshman Allison Belcher (236.10) and sophomore Kristy Richart (193.35) placed third, fourth and sixth, respectively. The three-meter diving event saw Schropp (240.30), Belcher (231.15) and Richart (207.45) finish in second, fourth and sixth place, respectively.
"This is an amazing win on the road against a Buffalo team that is so well-coached that the entire conference had better open their eyes," said head coach Liz Hinkleman. "We had some incredible clutch races toward the end of the competition to open our conference season with a victory."
The Rockets host MAC rival Miami on Friday, Nov. 4 at 5:00 p.m.
