Toledo, OH - The Toledo swimming diving team faced a test early in its conference dual-meet schedule and it passed with flying colors, defeating rival Miami 179-120 Friday, Nov. 4 at the UT Student Recreation Center. The Rockets took the lead from the onset and never looked back, winning 12 of 16 events and expanding their lead throughout the entire meet.
After the 200 medley relay team of Christina Noens, Laura Lindsay, Beth Rogers and Carly Harter kicked off the meet with a first-place finish (1:43.82), the wins just kept coming. UT then rallied off five straight wins through the sixth event, before Miami topped the scoreboard. Rachel Johnson won the 1650 freestyle (16:49.72); Harter won the 200 freestyle (1:50.50); Maria Bargardi won the 100 backstroke following a disqualification by teammate Noens (57.98); Lindsay won the 100 breaststroke (1:02.07) and Rogers topped the field in the 200 butterfly (2:03.02).
After an MU win in the 50 freestyle, the Rockets went back to work as more first-place finishes were recorded by Harter in the 100 freestyle (51.39); Noens in the 200 backstroke (2:00.63); Lindsay in the 200 breaststroke (2:16.04); Claire Leichty in the 500 freestyle (4:59.66) and Rogers in the 100 butterfly (55.76). Johnson placed first in the 400 IM, but a clock malfunction produced inaccurate timing results.
Additional top-three finishes were produced by Leichty in the 1650 freestyle (second-place; 17:07.45) and 200 freestyle (third-place; 1:55.07); McKenzie Bagan in the 200 butterfly (third-place; 2:06.36); Rogers in the 100 freestyle (second-place; 51.80); Johnson (second-place; 2:03.69) and Auckley (third-place; 2:04.46) in the 200 backstroke, LesLee Winfield in the 200 breaststroke (third-place; 2:23.21) and Louise Smyth in the 500 freestyle (second-place; 5:03.94).
In diving, Kristy Richart led UT in the one-meter event with a third-place finish with a score of 230.63. Allison Belcher (227.78) and Nikki Schropp (225.08) placed fourth and fifth, respectively. In three-meter diving, Schropp was the top Rocket, placing third with a score of 235.88. Richart (227.18) and Belcher 215.03) finished fourth and fifth, respectively.
"The divers showed that the hard work they've put in over the past two months has paid off, said diving coach Al Morrison. "They're on track to do good things at the end of the season."
If this meet was any indication of how things will turn out at the end of the season, the Toledo swimming and diving team is set to do good things as a whole.
"Miami is a great team and will definitely be one of our top competitors at the MAC championships in February," said head coach Liz Hinkleman. "Our girls swam up to their potential tonight, which makes me extremely proud of them. We just have to continue to improve as the season progresses."
Toledo will compete in the Akron Invite from Dec. 2-4.
