Columbus, OH - The Toledo women's tennis team saw continued success on the third day of competition in the ITA Midwest Regionals on Sunday, Oct. 22. Sophomore Chrissy Coffman advanced to the second round of the main singles draw, while the doubles team of senior Kelsey Anonsen and freshman Lexy Pitt has advanced to the regional quarterfinals, a first for the UT program.
Coffman advanced to the second round of the main singles draw before losing to Wowchuk of Northwestern (6-0, 6-0). Coffman defeated her first-round opponent, McGaffigan of Notre Dame, in three sets (6-3, 5-7, 6-2), upping her win-count to four in the regional tournament. It marked the first time in program history that Toledo has beaten a player from Notre Dame.
"Chrissy played the best singles match of her Toledo career against Notre Dame's McGaffigan," said head coach Tracy Mauntler. "I'm so proud of the way she competed. She really earned that win! Unfortunately, she ran out of gas I her second-round match, but she can take four quality wins with her from this event."
The doubles team of Anonsen and Pitt continued its winning ways, advancing to the regional quarterfinals. They defeated Bjerrehus/Lazaris of Cleveland State (8-6). This win marked the first time a Rockets doubles team has reached the regional quarterfinals.
"Lexy and Kelsey got off to a slow start this morning, but showed what kind of doubles team they really are by charging back to take control and win their match," added Mauntler. "Reaching the regional quarterfinals for the first time is already quite an accomplishment, but they are hungry for more!"
Play continues Sunday, Oct. 23 and the tournament concludes on Tuesday, Oct. 25.
