
Rockets Perform Well at WMU Invitational

Kalamazoo, MI - The Flight A doubles championship victory by senior Kelsey Anonsen and junior Alexandra Cristello highlighted the Toledo women's tennis team's performance at the Western Michigan Invitational this weekend.
The duo defeated Kerr/Denny of Western Michigan by a count of 8-4 in the finals, following an 8-5 victory over Ball State's team of Sanders/Wild in the first round. In an additional Saturday matchup, they also defeated Rogers/McLaughlin of Northern Illinois.
Another Rockets doubles team, sophomore Chrissy Coffman and freshman Lexy Pitt, won the Flight C doubles championship after beating Reuland/Johnson of Bowling Green, 9-7. They won their first-round matchup against Pickerell/Hebble of Ball State, 8-3.
Anonsen also placed third in Flight A singles after defeating Denny/Western Michigan (6-3, 6-4). The senior won her first-round match against Reuland/Bowling Green (6-2, 6-4) before losing to Wild/Ball State (6-2, 2-6, 1-0 (6)) in the second round.
Likewise, Pitt earned a third-place finish in Flight B singles, defeating Sanders/Ball State (6-1, 6-4) in her final match. In the first round, she defeated Friedrichs/Eastern Michigan (6-1, 7-6), before being topped by Eccleston/Bowling Green (6-3, 7-5).
Junior Silvia Carvajal finished as runner-up in Flight C singles. She defeated Malkin/Northern Illinois (6-4, 6-4) in the first round and outlasted Bhatia/Eastern Michigan (6-1, 6-7, 1-0 (13)) in the second round, before losing to Hill/Bowling Green in the finals (6-7, 7-5, 1-0 (7)).
Carvajal teamed with sophomore Amanda Border to place second in Flight D doubles, losing to De Lisle/Bhatia of Eastern Michigan, 8-6, in the finals. They won their first-round match against Malkin/Palcheco of Northern Illinois, 8-3.
Border also recorded a third-place finish in Flight D singles, defeating Easdale/Bowling Green (7-5, 1-6, 1-0 (7)) in her final match. She topped Aleck/Western Michigan (6-3, 7-5) in the first round, before losing to Hebble/Ball State (6-3, 6-3) in the second round.
"Overall, I was pleased with our improvement from the first tournament, especially at the No. 1 doubles spot," said head coach Tracy Mauntler. "Going undefeated against conference opponents is a great accomplishment. I was also impressed with Silvia Carvajal's singles performance, as she experienced her best results thus far as a Rocket."
Toledo hosts the Rocket Invitational Oct. 14-15.
