Chicago, IL - The Toledo men's cross country team finished first overall in the Lakefront Invitational on Saturday, scoring 55 points and placing three runners in the top 10 to win its first meet of the season.
The Rockets were led by junior Nick Thomas, who placed second with a time of 24:49. It was the second consecutive meet that Thomas was the top finisher for UT. Not far behind him was senior Jonathan DeWitt in fourth place with a time of 24:58 and redshirt freshman Jake Kasperski, who finished ninth in 25:25. Rounding out the scoring five was sophomore Jacob Barnes (17th place; 25:39) and freshman Daniel Thompson (23rd place; 25:46).
Also placing for Toledo was junior Elliot Livensparger (33rd place; 25:59) and sophomore Ricky Adamson (88th place; 26:41). Trevin Flickinger finished with a time of 27:00, followed closely by Nick Brenner in 27:01, Adam Smercina in 27:13 and Cory Schoendorf in 28:02.
"We were winning by even more but Hilary had to drop out at 5,000 meters because he strained his hamstring," said head coach Kevin Hadsell. "This was a very nice win for the men and a great race for every guy.
"Nick Thomas did a great job. I think he's capable of a top-five finish at the MAC championships this year after finishing 14th place last year."
In the women's race, UT placed 12th overall with a total of 348 points. Leading the way for the Rockets was junior Samantha Condron, who crossed the line in 44th place with a time of 18:43. The other scoring runners were sophomore Elizabeth Lemon (59th place; 18:54); freshman Megan Gaysunas (68th place; 18:59); senior Amanda Mannon (88th place; 19:14) and junior Hannah Evans (89th place; 19:15).
Freshmen Megan Csehi and Kelly Morgan were the sixth and seventh runners for Toledo, placing 90th in 19:16 and 92nd in 19:18, respectively.
Also running for Toledo was freshmen Jaclyn Koza (19:24) and Julia Pusateri (19:36); junior Richelle Gray (20:05) and senior Ali Fisher (20:27).
"I think the women that raced did a nice job," Hadsell said. "They ran tough and were able to beat Northern Illinois without running our top 13 women in this meet."
The men's team will next compete in the Pre-NCAA Invitational in Terre Haute, IN on Sunday, Oct. 16, while the women will be running in the Wisconsin Adidas Invitational on Friday, Oct. 14.
