Rockets Win 4-3 Thriller Over Rival Falcons

TOLEDO, OH - Hers wasn't the final match to be completed, but for the second-straight contest, Nadia Zoubareva sealed the victory for the Toledo women's tennis team as the Rockets downed Bowling Green 4-3 on Friday.
After dropping the doubles point, Toledo had picked up three singles victories, and Zoubareva rallied from one set down to score a 5-7, 6-4, 6-3 win to close out the Falcons and send the UT faithful -- who braved temperatures in the low 40s with wind gusts over 20 mph -- home happy.
"This was a great match and a great win for us," said Tracy Mauntler, head coach, as her Rockets improved to 10-4 (3-1 MAC). "We had a spirited effort after the doubles."
Zoubareva had teamed with Ashley Frey to record an 8-2 win at No. 2 doubles earlier in the afternoon. But Bowling Green took the match's opening point as Maha Guirguis and Martina Wodzinski could not rally all the way back from a 5-3 deficit, falling 8-5 at the No. 1 position.
The senior duo, though, made accords by blistering through their singles matches. Wodzinski had a flawless victory at No. 1 singles, earning a 6-0, 6-0 win, while Guirguis similarly had little difficulties at No. 2 with her 6-4, 6-0 victory. Their victories came against Christina Chiricosta (No. 1) and Katia Babina (No. 2), the tandem that bested them in their doubles match, and both were also undefeated in MAC singles action entering today.
"Martina really set the tone for our singles matches," Mauntler said. "She had a game plan and really executed it well."
Frey continued her strong play at No. 3 singles, as the junior took a 6-1, 6-4 win in moving to 9-4 in the third position this season. That left Zoubareva and Silvia Carvajal as the lone two matches on the court, and both went to a third set. However, Zoubareva jumped to a 5-3 lead and broke serve to pick up her 12th singles victory of the season. She had clinched UT's 4-3 win over Buffalo last Saturday with another three-set win.
The Rockets will continue their homestand with a 1 p.m. match against Western Michigan on Saturday. Temperatures are expected to be near 70 with plenty of sunshine as Toledo looks for just its second win all-time against the Broncos.
"We have some momentum and some confidence after today," Mauntler said. "I'm looking forward to another great match with Western Michigan."
