TOLEDO, OH – The Toledo women's tennis team fell just short in its quest to knock off Western Michigan, falling 5-2 Saturday at the UT Varsity Courts.
The Rockets nearly scored the opening doubles point as Martina Wodzinski and Maha Guirguis tallied a 9-7 win at No. 1. However, Ashley Frey and Nadia Zoubareva were edged out, 9-8 (2) at No. 2, while Silvia Carvajal and Melissa Reynolds fell 8-4 at No. 3.
“That was emotionally tough after losing the doubles point,” Tracy Mauntler, head coach, said. “The doubles lasted over an hour and a half and it was tough losing it the way we did in a the tiebreak.”
Western Michigan jumped out quickly in the singles action, winning at No. 1, No. 5 and No. 6 to seal the match. Guirguis scored a 7-5, 6-1 victory at No. 2 singles, and Frey picked up a 7-6 (7-2), 7-5 win at third singles.
“I was really pleased how much effort our girls gave, but unfortunately it just wasn't enough,” Mauntler said. “We rebounded very well and it could have gone our way. This was the closest we've played Western Michigan in awhile, and we still have confidence even with the loss. Now we have to focus on closing out the season strong, get ready for a tough Eastern Michigan team and the MAC tournament.”
The Rockets (10-5, 3-2 MAC) host Eastern Michigan at 1 p.m. Saturday on the UT Varsity Courts.
