Zoubareva Clinches Win as Women's Tennis Knocks Off Buffalo

BUFFALO, NY - In an emotionally charged match, Toledo's women's tennis team knocked off Buffalo 4-3 on Saturday, snapping its seven-match losing streak to the Bulls.
With the match knotted at three, Nadia Zoubareva represented UT's final hope to pull out a victory, and the senior delivered with a 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 4 singles to lift the Rockets to the win.
"This win feels great," Tracy Mauntler, head coach, said. "Beating Buffalo was one of our goals at the beginning of the season. Buffalo has gotten the best of us so many times over the past four years. I'm so proud of the team effort today. We battled until the end."
The day's dramatics were set almost from the first serve. Buffalo seemed poised to take the crucial doubles point, but the senior duo of Maha Guirguis and Martina Wodzinski rallied from a 5-2 deficit to record an 8-6 win at No. 1. Coupled with Ashley Frey and Zoubareva's 8-4 win, UT led 1-0 entering the singles.
Buffalo captured the first two singles matches, but Rahshell Washington answered with a 6-2, 7-5 victory at No. 5. Guirguis followed with a 6-3, 7-5 victory, though the Bulls came back with one more victory to even the score.
Zoubareva, with all eyes on her as the last match on the courts, calmly recovered after dropping the first set as Toledo improved to 9-4 and 2-1 in the MAC.
The Rockets return home to face rival Bowling Green at 1 p.m. on Friday at the UT Varsity Courts.
