TOLEDO, OH - After dropping a hard-fought doubles point, the Toledo women's tennis team couldn't pick up any momentum heading into singles action, falling 7-0 to Miami Saturday at Laurel Hill.
With the loss, the Rockets conclude the regular season with a 12-6 record (5-3 MAC) and are locked into the fourth spot in the MAC Tournament. Toledo will take on fifth-seed Buffalo at 10 a.m. Friday, April 30 at Western Michigan. Miami, meanwhile, completed its second-straight season as undefeated regular season champs and enter as the tournament's top seed.
The doubles point went right down to the wire. Ashley Frey and Nadia Zoubareva put Toledo on the board with an 8-2 victory at No. 2, but Rahshell Washington and Silvia Carvajal couldn't rally from an early deficit and fell, 8-5, at the third position.
That left the senior duo of Maha Guirguis and Martina Wodzinski on the court. They trailed throughout the match before evening the tally at six, then held serve to take a 7-6 lead. However, Miami recovered and went on to take the tiebreaker, 9-8 (4), and take a 1-0 lead in the highly intense matchup between the conference rivals.
UT fared little better in its singles matches. Both Guirguis and Jessica Azoulay jumped out to early leads with first set victories, but could not hold on. The RedHawks took the other four singles points in straight sets.
"Losing the doubles point the way we did really took a lot out of us," Tracy Mauntler, head coach, said. "We knew it would be extremely difficult simply to split the singles matches even if we had won the doubles point, and tonight it was just too tough to have to win four singles matches. Give Miami's girls credit because they really played well."
The match marked the regular season finale for seniors Azoulay, Guirguis, Wodzinski and Zoubareva. The quartet has a chance to improve on its 56 match victories it's accumulated the past four years at this week's MAC Tournament.
