Rockets Shut Down Cardinals, 7-0

TOLEDO, OH - A dominant effort throughout the lineup led the Toledo women's tennis team to a 7-0 shutout of Ball State on Friday at the UT Varsity Courts.
The victory lifts the Rockets to 12-5 on the season and 5-2 in the MAC, assuring Toledo of at least a fourth-place finish in the conference regular season standings.
"I am happy with our performances from top to bottom today," Tracy Mauntler, head coach, said. "We needed a great effort today to get us ready for Miami tomorrow. I feel very good about how the girls are playing right now."
It took UT's top-two doubles teams barely 45 minutes to clinch the opening point for the Rockets, as Martina Wodzinski and Maha Guirguis won the final four games to take an 8-3 win and Ashley Frey and Nadia Zoubareva had little difficulties in taking an 8-1 win at second doubles.
Rahshell Washington and Silvia Carvajal staged the day's biggest comeback, as they trailed 7-3 and fought all the way back to win in the tiebreak, 8-7 (3).
Toledo's singles players dropped just two sets on the afternoon. Wodzinski earned a 6-0, 6-2 win at first singles, with Guirguis scoring a 6-2, 6-2 victory. Frey also took a 6-0, 6-2 win, while Zoubareva needed to rally after dropping her first set for a 1-6, 6-4, 10-4 decision. Washington picked up her second win of the day (7-5, 6-0) at fifth singles, and Jessica Azoulay picked up her second-straight win at sixth singles for Toledo, 4-6, 6-2, 6-3.
The Rockets host defending league champion Miami at 1 p.m. Saturday at the UT Varsity Courts. In the event of rain, the match will be bumped back to 4:30 p.m. Saturday at Laurel Hill. The RedHawks had solo possession of first place in the MAC at 6-0 entering their match with Eastern Michigan today.
