FISHERS, IN - The Rockets' women's golf team is in fifth place with a 19-over par 307 but is within 10 shots of first-place Kent State following Friday's first round of the 2010 Mid-American Conference Women's Golf Championship. The tournament is being hosted by the University of Toledo at the par-72, 6,037-yard Hawthorns Golf & Country Club. Rain started falling midway through the round with intermittent showers continuing throughout the afternoon.
The Golden Flashes shot a nine-over par 297 and leads second-place Ball State (301) by four strokes with Western Michigan (305) in third place and Eastern Michigan (306) in fourth place.
Senior Marguerite Johnson paced the Rockets with a three-over par 75 and is tied for sixth place. She was at even-par through 14 holes but double-bogeyed the par-three 15th hole and bogeyed the par-four 18th hole. Junior Erica Rivard is tied for 11th place at four-over 76 with juniors Emily Hardcastle and Michelle Hui tied for 18th place at six-over par 78. Sophomore Georgina Hunt is tied for 22nd place with a seven-over par 79.
"We're still within striking distance of Kent State but we need to play a lot better if we're going to stay in contention," Toledo Head Coach Nicole Hollingsworth said. "We shot 12-over par over the last six holes and that's an area we'll have to improve in."
The Broncos' Elise Swartout was the only golfer to shoot under par in the first round, carding a one-under 71. The WMU senior opened her round with a birdie on the par-four, 359-yard first hole and shot a two-under 34 on the front nine. After bogeying the 10th hole, she registered pars on her final eight holes.
The Golden Flashes' Martina Gavier and Cardinals' Rachael Pruett are one stroke behind Swartout with even-par 72s. Gavier and Pruett were both consistent throughout as their rounds as each featured just two birdies and two bogeys.
Saturday's second round begins with tee times starting at 8:00 a.m.
