Men's Tennis Loses Another Close One

Charleston, SC ? The Toledo men's tennis team won the doubles point but could not hold off the Bulldogs as The Citadel won 4-3. The Rockets are now 10-9 on the season and 1-0 in the MAC.

"We are having our share of 4-3's this year already, and I love it,” Head Coach Al Wermer said. “But I'd prefer a ?W'. The Bulldogs played a great match, but I take 100% blame. Something I forgot is that on a spring trip with four freshmen, I need to be more pro-active with the team prep and focus. I could have done better."

In the doubles competition, junior Jared Miller and freshman Nutthavit Likitkumchorn beat The Citadel's Daniel Dossetor and Yufo Sutantio, 9-7, at the No. 1 spot. Winning in the No. 3 spot and clinching the first point for the Rockets was sophomore Tyler Sonkin and junior Wade Ward. The pair beat the Bulldogs Martin King and Frederic Petrilli 8-4.

Toledo won two singles matches, and the score was then tied at three points when the final match at No. 4 would determine who would get the win.

Likitkumchorn went 2-0 on the day winning at his singles spot against King, 6-2, 7-5. At the No. 6 spot, junior Jayson Miller defeated Petrilli 7-5, 6-1.

At the No. 4 spot, Sonkin and The Citadel's Alberto Diaz were tied at one set apiece going into the third and final set for the match and win for their respective teams. Sonkin came up on the wrong end, losing 1-6, 7-5, 6-4.

Toledo will next come home for a four-match homestand where it will first host IPFW on March 15. The first serve will start at 1:00 p.m. in Toledo.
