Women's Tennis Bounces Over Detroit

Toledo, OH - The University of Toledo women's tennis team bounced past Detroit 5-2 on Friday Feb. 1. The Rockets are now 3-0 on the season.

“We competed very well today,” Head Coach Tracy Mauntler said. “I was very proud of our team's effort and energy today. Detroit definitely pushed us and I really like the way we responded.”

Toledo took two doubles matches for the first point of the evening. Freshman Ashley Frey and sophomore Maha Guirguis defeated Detroit's Annie Moore and Zeljka Minic 8-4 while sophomore Nadia Zoubareva and junior Jenny Belsky beat the Titans Kelly Davis and Svetlana Flankova 8-1 at No. 2 doubles. Guirguis and Frey are 2-0 when they play together and Zoubareva and Belsky are 3-0 together.

In singles, Guirguis won her match at No. 1 against Annie Moore, 6-3, 6-2. She is now 2-1 at this spot.

Belsky beat Detroit's Aneta Maricevic in three matches, 4-6, 6-4, 10-6. Belsky is 3-0 at the No. 3 spot.

Also winning their singles matches was Zoubareva and senior Sarah Horning. Zoubareva downed Detroit's Erin Weldon 6-3, 6-3 while Horning beat the Titans Davis 6-2, 6-2. They are both 2-1 in singles at their spots.

Toledo will next host Xavier on Sunday at Shadow Valley Tennis Club in Toledo. The first serve is set for 10:00 a.m.
