Toledo, OH - Junior guard Kashif Payne was named Mid-American Conference West Division Player of the Week this week following his strong performance in Toledo's wins over Buffalo and Miami. It was the second time in his career he has earned the honor and the fifth time that a Rocket has been selected West Division Player of the Week in the 2006-07 campaign.
A Chester, PA native, Payne averaged 14.5 points, 3.0 assists and 2.0 steals per game and posted a 61.1 FG% (11-of-18) to help the Rockets tie a pair of school records. UT's 7-0 start equals the school mark for most MAC wins to begin a season and the Rockets also have a 14-game MAC win streak dating back to last year.
Payne tallied 14 points and five assists in UT's 78-62 win over Buffalo last Wednesday and helped force the Bulls into 32 turnovers. He followed that performance by sharing team scoring honors with a season-high 15 points on 6-of-8 shooting from the field and three steals in UT's 61-56 win over Miami.
Toledo (11-8, 7-0 MAC) returns to action on Wednesday, Jan. 31 with a trip to Athens, OH to face Ohio University (13-7, 4-3 MAC) in a game that tips off at 7:00 p.m. The Rockets will then return home to face arch-rival Bowling Green (10-10, 1-6 MAC) in Savage Hall on Saturday, Feb. 3 at 7:00 p.m.
