Toledo Quotes
Head Coach Tom Amstutz
"I couldn't be any prouder of my football team. The players played with heart. They did everything a coach could ask for. I look at every one of those players as winners tonight. They played their hearts out, they played their guts out, they played like winners. That's what I'll remember about this night."
"Clint just had some cramps. It was a long game. Three overtimes is a lot of extra football, a lot of extra strain on a football team. So he dehydrated a little bit."
"I just wanted to see if we had a quarterback. Clint is just a sophomore. He was 39-of-49. I liked the way he played. I liked the way he ran our offense. He can build off that game."
"I'm really proud of the freshmen and the younger players. They're maturing ahead of schedule. They're good athletes and they meshed in with our team really well. It's also a tribute to our upperclassmen, how they helped blend them into the team and encouraged them."
"Chris Hopkins had as good a game as a tight end has ever had at the University of Toledo. He made big play after big play. He blocked really well. It was an NFL-type performance."
"Both defenses played very well. At the end of regulation it was 23-23. The final score in these overtime games can be misleading."
"(ISU QB) Bret Meyer is a very good player. He can run and throw. We didn't have a very good answer for him."
Senior tight end Chris Hopkins
"I gave every ounce of energy I had for The University of Toledo. My commitment to this team was to do my part, to play my piece of the puzzle."
"I have to give it up to Iowa State. They played a great game. It was two focused teams out there tonight."
Sophomore QB Clint Cochran
"I didn't get enough fluids, or too much fluids, I don't know. I just got cramps. It was nothing serious. I was upset that I had to come out for that one play. It's excruciating for a moment but once they massage it out it's okay."
(Final play) "It was an out-route but Chris (Hopkins) was covered early. I came back and tried to hit the number two and he wasn't open either, so I came back to Chris. It was really a third option. I thought we had it, too. Their guy made a great defensive play to break it up. I wish I woluld have had a little more velocity on it and thrown it a little earlier."
"We made great plays to tie that game up and then again in overtime. Chris Hopkins and David Nichols made some amazing catches. I probably shouldn't even have thrown some of those balls but they caught them. When you've got teammates like that, anything can happen."
"As a quarterback, it was really something to watch Iowa State's offense. Bret Meyer had a great game, Todd Blythe had a great game. Their defense is good, too. They were giving me trouble all night. It was a game of amazing plays. In the end, they made one more play than we did."
