Tom Amstutz is 3-3 in season openers, including 0-3 when on the road.
Toledo suffered its first loss in four career overtime contests. Prior to tonight's setback, the Rockets defeated Nevada (40-37, 1995), Western Michigan (10-7, 1996) and most recently Bowling Green (44-41, 2OT) in extra sessions.
Sophomore QB Clint Cochran completed 39-of-49 passes for 367 yards and three TD's in his second career start. Cochran's completions rank second in school history in a single game, while his passing yards and attempts rank seventh. He completed a pass to nine different players. The last time a Rocket QB had at least 30 completions in a game was Bruce Gradkowski (31) vs. Syracuse on Sept. 27, 2003.
Fourteen true or redshirt freshmen saw action in tonight's season opener (Walter Atkins, Tom Burzine, Barry Church, Skylaar Constant, Archie Donald, Greg Harris, Eric Heller, Maurice Hill, Lester Richmond, Desmond Marrow, Alex Steigerwald, Brandon Summers, Derrick Summers, Douglas Westbrook.)
Redshirt freshman and back-up quarterback Brandon Summers made his collegiate debut in the first quarter and executed a 48-yard pooch punt to the Iowa State four-yard line. Summers also punted one other time and recorded a 39-yard boot for an average of 43.5 yards per punt.
Senior TE Chris Hopkins reeled in a career-best 13 passes for 139 yards and three touchdowns. Hopkins three TD catches are tied for the most in school history, while his 13 catches are tied for third in a contest. His previous highs were six receptions for 83 yards vs. Western Michigan on Sept. 10, 2005. He has totaled six TD receptions in the last three games.
Senior WR Steve Odom finished with nine catches for 102 yards. Odom has caught a pass in 38 straight games and sits alone in third place in school history with 179 career receptions.
Toledo sustained a 99-yard scoring drive in the second quarter which culminated in a four-yard TD pass from Clint Cochran to Chris Hopkins. The last time UT had a 99-yard drive was against UNLV on Sept. 21, 2002.
Junior RB Jalen Parmele made his first collegiate start and carried the ball a career-high 18 times for 70 yards and a TD. Parmele's previous bests were 12 carries for 60 yards at Northern Illinois on Nov. 9, 2004.
Freshman SS Barry Church led the Rockets with a team-high 10 tackles, including nine solos. Church was also credited with forcing a fumble on the opening drive of the game.
Senior LB Mike Alston was credited with 1.5 sacks and now has 16 in his career to rank tied for fifth in school history.
Toledo was a perfect 5-of-5 in red-zone scoring chances.
The Rockets finished with 23 first downs, but only five came via the run. Fifteen came through the air and one by penalty.
