Toledo, OH - The Toledo women's tennis team eclipsed last season's win total with their 10th victory by defeating Ball State 4-3 in a thrilling match at Laurel Hill Tennis Club. The win was the first for the Rockets over the Cardinals since April 24, 1992.
The Rockets (10-3, 1-0 MAC) began by winning the all-important doubles point after taking two of the three matches. Myrian Cueva and Eunice Paravicini won 8-2 at first doubles, while Sarah VanderMolen and Sarah Horning won 8-2 at third doubles.
The singles matches were fiercely contested as three matches went the distance. VanderMolen at sixth singles and Paravicini at second singles each won fairly easily as the Rockets took two of the first three matches and looked to be in control.
BSU stormed back, however, and won the fourth and fifth singles matches in three sets. The outcome of the match came down to the first singles contest between Cueva and Jessica Thompson, an epic three-hour battle. After losing the first set 6-3, Cueva came back and took the second 6-2 and after many spirited rallies between the two titans, took the third set 6-4.
"This feels great, the older girls on the team, including myself, have been waiting a long time to win a match like this against a team like Ball State," Head Coach Tracy Honko said. "We knew we had to win the doubles point so that was huge. We were strong in singles and three matches could've gone either way."
"We all had confidence in Myriam that she would pull it out," Honko continued. "I want all the weight on her shoulders in that situation. The improvement over the last three years has been amazing and the girls deserved this win. I hope we can do the same tomorrow against Miami."
The Rockets will try to win their first-ever match against Miami tomorrow when they host the RedHawks at 1:30 P.M. at Laurel Hill. The RedHawks are 31-0 lifetime against UT.
