TOLEDO, OH - Carrie Moore scored a game-high 23 points, including a second-half basket that put Western Michigan ahead to stay, in the Broncos' 73-71 victory over Toledo on Saturday before a season-high 2,812 fans in Savage Hall.
Lindsey Brown added 17 points, Amanda Parker had 13 and Casey Rost chipped in with 12 for the Broncos (6-10, 3-2 MAC).
Junior Savannah Werner had 20 points and seven rebounds, while classmate Danielle Bishop added 18 points with a career-high eight assists for Toledo (6-9, 1-4 MAC).
The Rockets dominated the first half of play on the interior, outscoring the Broncos 34-12 for points in the paint and led 48-37 at the intermission.
Toledo hit 12 of its first 16 shots from the field and converted a sizzling 65.6 percent (21-of-32) from the floor to post the most points scored in a half this season. They built that lead by taking care of the basketball and dished out 15 assists on those 21 baskets, while committing only three turnovers.
As hot as the Rockets were from the field, the Broncos were equally impressive shooting the ball. The Broncos connected on five of their first eight shots from beyond the arc and the score was tied 25-25 with 10:18 left.
Sophomore Aaron Richmond quickly answered the bell for the Rockets with a triple, before Werner and senior Monique Lloyd scored 12 of UT's final 20 points to give the home team an 11-point cushion at the half. Fourteen of UT's 21 field goals in the first stanza were layups.
In the second half, WMU began to chip away at the lead and had a 12-4 run to draw within a basket, 57-55, with 9:54 remaining. Senior Amanda Davis responded with back-to-back layups for the Rockets to fend off the Broncos' rally for a short while. Unfortunately for the Midnight Blue and Gold, WMU made one final push with a game-clinching 13-0 run, highlighted by consecutive layups from Moore and a triple by Rost to hand UT its fourth-consecutive loss and sixth setback in the last seven games.
Toledo cooled off considerably in the second half and shot just 34.5 percent (10-of-29) from the field, including 18.2 percent (2-of-11) from beyond the arc.
The Rockets return to action on Wednesday, Jan. 25 when they travel to Buffalo, NY to battle the Bulls. The contest is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. in Alumni Arena.
