BUFFALO, NY - Toledo claimed a well-earned 57-47 victory at Buffalo on Wednesday in Mid-American Conference action at Alumni Arena. With tonight's victory, the Rockets snap a four-game losing skid and improve to 7-9 overall, 2-4 in the MAC.
"This was a really big win for us," Toledo Head Coach Mark Ehlen said. "When you've dropped four in a row and six of your last seven, any win is a big win."
Redshirt freshman Diana Reindl led three Rockets in double figures with 14 points. Junior Savannah Werner added 12 points and eight rebounds, while junior Danielle Bishop chipped in 13 points and four assists.
Toledo shot an impressive 48.9 percent (23-of-47) from the floor and held a 31-29 edge on the boards. The Midnight Blue and Gold also did a good job defensively and limited the Bulls to 37.3 percent (19-of-51) shooting, including 23.5 percent (4-of-17) from beyond the arc.
"We knew going in we had to get out on their three-point shooters, and I thought we did a good job with that," Ehlen said. "Our defense was the difference in tonight's game."
Buffalo (7-10, 2-4 MAC) looked good early and jumped out to a 7-1 lead. The Rockets missed seven of their first eight shots from the floor and they did not register their first field goal until 15:12 left on an offensive putback by Werner.
Toledo then started to catch fire and hit four consecutive shots, including a pair by senior Amanda Davis, to take a 12-7 lead. It would be a lead the Rockets would not relinquish. At the same time, UT's defensive effort picked up, as they held the Bulls scoreless for the next 7:08.
The Rockets closed out the first half with strong play inside from senior Monique Lloyd, Reindl, Davis and Werner to hold a 31-19 advantage at the intermission.
After starting the game 1-of-8 from the field, UT finished the first half 12-of-20 (60.0 percent) and held a 21-12 edge in points in the paint. Their defense was impressive throughout the opening stanza, as they held the Bulls to only 30.8 percent (8-of-26) shooting from the field and kept them off the scoreboard for the final 4:51.
In the second half, UB's Meunier and Turner scored 14 of their first 17 points to cut UT's lead to 41-36 with 10:17 showing on the clock.
The Rockets, though, responded with more strong play inside from Werner, Lloyd and Reindl to push their lead back to double digits, 52-42, with 2:45 left. They also limited Buffalo to only 11 points from over the final 10 minutes, while at the same time knocking down some key free throws to help snap their losing skid.
The Rockets return to action on Saturday, Jan. 28 when they host Miami at 7:00 p.m. in Savage Hall.
