Toledo, OH - Toledo (22-22) is back on the winning track with two victories over Dayton (14-15-1) today, 11-10 and 2-0. It was a game full of hot sticks in the doubleheader opener, as the Rockets connected for 12 hits while the Flyers hit eight. By game two, the bats had cooled down as UT had six hits against UD's Myher and sophomore RHP Stephanie Moore regained her composure to hold Dayton to three. All but two Rockets recorded hits in game one, while freshman LF Leslie Stong led the way with a 2-for-3 showing in game two.
Dayton jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead after the top of the second inning, plating three runs in the first inning and two in the second. UT's starting pitcher, Moore, had trouble finding the strike zone and walked five batters in her inning of work. Senior RHP Kim Pettitt entered the game in the second inning to finish off the Flyers with two strikeouts and a fly out to end the inning.
Finally, Toledo's bats turned hot in the bottom of second and third innings, scoring two runs in the second and eight in the third. Both runs in the second inning were driven in by a double from sophomore CF Erica Singer, which scored freshman 1B Megan McCauley and senior 2B Kris Shultz. Although the Flyers would plate one run in the top of the third to pull ahead by four, the Rockets answered back with a stellar third inning.
Leading the rally in the third was McCauley, who singled through the left side to score both juniors Gina Muratori and Jennifer Susman. Shultz followed McCauley with a single to plate Pettitt, who walked, to put Toledo down by one with no outs on the board. The Rockets continued to beat up on Dayton's starting pitcher, Erin LaFayette, as Singer and Stong would both double to plate three more runs in Toledo's favor. With Stong on second, Susman connected for her third home run of the season to put UT up 10-6. Chelsea Grozenksi replaced LaFayette in the circle for the Flyers to make the final out of the inning.
A leadoff homer by Dayton's Laura Matthews in the top of the fifth inning was quickly answered by Toledo's freshman 3B Brittany Robbins' leadoff bomb in the bottom half of the inning. UT still had an 11-7 advantage over the Flyers heading into the sixth inning.
Dayton made a late charge at the Rockets, plating two runs in the sixth and one in the seventh, but would leave their tying run stranded on second base to end the game with a Toledo 11-10 victory.
Pettitt (12-10) earned the win for UT with 6.0 innings pitched, allowing six hits for five runs while fanning five batters. LaFayette (4-6) took the loss in her 2.2 innings of work, after allowing 10 runs for 10 hits.
Recording multiple hits for Toledo in game one were Susman (2-for-4, HR, two runs scored, two RBI), Muratori (2-for-3, run scored), McCauley (2-for-4, two runs scored, two RBI), and Singer (2-for-3, four RBI).
Dayton's Melissa Myher and UT's Stephanie Moore kept the hits minimal in game two with their performances from in the circle. Moore only gave up two hits in six innings, while Myher allowed five in five innings of work. Nonetheless, Toledo took advantage of two Flyers' errors in the bottom of the sixth to score its only two runs of the game.
With two outs, Shultz singled through the right side and stole second, while Singer would reach base on an error by the third baseman. A stolen base by Singer put Toledo in scoring position as another error by the third baseman would put freshman 3B Valerie Moxim on first and score Shultz and Singer for two unearned runs. Moore held off the Flyers in the top of the seventh inning to preserve the Rockets' 2-0 victory.
Moore (10-12) regained her composure in game two to hurl a 7.0 inning complete game. She limited Dayton to three hits while striking out four and walking two batters. Myher (10-7) took the loss in her 6.0 innings of work allowing six hits for two unearned runs.
Muratori's 1-for-3 showing in game two extends her hitting streak to seven games, while Stong 2-for-3) and Shultz (1-for-3, run scored) have three consecutive games with one or more hits under their belts.
Up next, the Rockets will host Oakland in a doubleheader on Thursday, April 21. First pitch from Scott Park is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
