Women's Tennis Downs Duquesne, 6-1

Toledo, OH - The University of Toledo women's tennis team started its busy weekend on the right foot, defeating Duquesne today (Feb. 18), 6-1. The Rockets (4-2) handed the Dukes (1-1) their first loss of the 2005 season, and look to continue their three-match weekend with the same success as today. Tomorrow, UT will face Cleveland State at 2:00 p.m. at Laurel Hill Swim & Tennis Club before heading north to Michigan State for a match at 9:00 a.m.

"This was a great win for us," Head Coach Tracy Honko said. "The team is playing really well right now. It is great to see their improvement since the fall. I'm proud of Vandermolen and Rivero. They played the most aggressive doubles they've played all year."

The Rockets wrapped up the Dukes in doubles action, taking both the No. 1 and 2 matches, 8-2. Junior Myriam Cueva and freshman Sarah Horning paired up at the No. 1 spot to defeat DU's Hughes and Wagner. In the No. 2 position, junior Viviana Rivero and freshman Sarah VanderMolen dominated the Dukes' Sailer and Bezjak to seal the doubles point for Toledo.

In singles play, Toledo claimed five of the six matches to claim victory over Duquesne. Cueva improved her dual-meet record at No. 1 singles to 6-1 with a win over Bezjak, 6-4, 6-4. Rivero cleaned up at the No. 2 spot, 6-0, 6-3. Junior Daniella Moran battled DU's Sailer at No. 3, but was unable to pull through with a victory in a 5-7, 6-2 (8-10) loss. The Rockets' three freshmen finished off Duquesne at the No. 4, 5 and 6 positions. Sarah Horning won 6-0, 6-4 at No. 4; Sarah VanderMolen improved to 5-1 in singles action with her 6-2, 6-2 victory at No. 5; and Sarah Thompson rallied from a first-set loss to defeat the Dukes' McDermott, 5-7, 6-4 (10-4).
