AMHERST, MA - Toledo (1-5) lost its fifth-consecutive game Monday night, suffering a 76-56 setback at Massachusetts (4-3) in non-conference action at the Mullins Center.
The Minutewomen shot a season-best 54.7 percent (35-of-67) from the field and its point total was a season best. UMass ran up and down floor on the Rockets holding a 16-0 edge on fast-break points and a commanding 54-18 advantage for points in the paint.
"Their transition baskets in the first half just killed us," Toledo Head Coach Mark Ehlen said. "I thought we did a better job in the second half but it was too little too late."
Pam Rosanio and Tamara Tatham paced four Massachusetts players in double figures with 13 points apiece. Patrycja Gulak (12 pts.) and Brooke Campbell (11 pts.) also tallied at least 10 points in the contest.
Olivia Terry led the Rockets with 14 points. It is the third time in the last four games Terry has scored in double figures. Other Rockets in double figures included sophomore Danielle Bishop (12 pts., 3 steals) and senior Karin Hoogendam (10 pts., 9 reb.).
Toledo jumped out of the gates quickly and led 6-2 after a three-pointer by Bishop. The Rockets continued to hold the lead at 8-5 when Hoogendam knocked down a jumper from the top of the key with 17:41 left. That jumper would be UT's last points for the next four minutes. Massachusetts would go on a 15-0 run to establish control of the contest and cruise to its third-consecutive victory. UMass recorded six steals during the run which it turned into 12 fast-break lay-up points. UT cut the deficit to 10 points, 26-16, at the 10:38 mark on a jumper by freshman Jasmine House, but UMass scored the next two baskets and never led by less than 10 for the rest of the game.
The Rockets continued to struggle with offense, connecting on 29.9 percent (20-of-67) from the field, including 25.9 percent (7-of-27) from beyond the arc. UT also found it difficult to convert from the charity stripe, knocking down only 60.0 percent (9-of-15) from the free throw line.
Toledo will return to action on Saturday, Dec. 11 to battle Cleveland State. Tip-off against the Vikings is slated for 3:00 p.m. in Henry J. Goodman Arena.
