TOLEDO, OH - The University of Toledo women's soccer team defeated Miami, 3-1, in Mid-American Conference action Sunday afternoon at sunny Scott Park.
The win lifted the Rockets' records to 6-5-2 overall and 3-3-1 in MAC play, while the RedHawks dropped to 4-3-1 and 4-3-1, respectively.
"This was a tremendous team performance," said fourth-year Rocket coach Brad Evans. "I'm very proud of our team's effort today. We played very, very well against a good Miami team. This is a big win for our program."
All four of the goals Sunday came in the first half. Toledo drew first blood in the sixth minute on a follow-up goal by senior Rebecca Hollis. Sophomore teammate Diana Ginley found herself alone around the Miami six-yard line and she rifled a shot on goal. RedHawk goalkeeper Megan Ortner made a nice stop but was unable to secure the ball. Hollis followed the shot, established control and placed a shot into the back of the net for her fourth goal of the season.
The Rockets doubled their lead just over two minutes later on Ginley's team-leading fifth tally of the season. Junior Pam Richard connected with sophomore Pene Hughes on a thru ball down the middle of the field deep into Miami territory. Hughes promptly forwarded the ball to Ginley behind the RedHawks' defense, who hit a shot past Ortner for a two-goal advantage at 7:06. Both Richard and Hughes were credited with the assist on the well-orchestrated play.
Toledo finished off its scoring at 28:47 on the heels of an own goal by Miami. Off a corner kick, Hughes played the ball into the middle of the Miami goal and struck the RedHawks' Jennifer Rush in the back and bounced into the net.
Miami broke through on the scoreboard with just six seconds remaining in the first half. The RedHawks' Ashley Swinehart was taken down in the penalty box from behind by UT senior midfielder Robin Davidson and was awarded a penalty kick. Swinehart converted at 44:54 to make the score 3-1 at the intermission.
Toledo sophomore Jen Whipple made four saves in the match, including three in the second half. For the RedHawks, Ortner made three saves.
With Toledo leading 2-0 in the first half, Miami looked to cut the lead in half on a flurry of shots by Lindsay Dunmead. A Miami midfielder played the ball over the last line of UT defense and Dunmead ran onto it and was all alone with Whipple. Dunmead fired a shot but Whipple made a diving save. With the ball still deep in UT territory, Dunmead had another chance but again Whipple was equal to the challenge and made an acrobatic save to keep Miami off the scoreboard.
"Jen just keeps improving with each game," Evans said. "She continues to make big saves and our kids are so confident with her in goal."
The RedHawks held a 12-7 advantage in shot attempts, but UT held a 7-1 edge in corner kicks.
The victory broke a three-match home losing streak for the Midnight Blue and Gold. UT won at home for the first time since Sept. 17.
Toledo returns to action on Friday, Oct. 15 when it travels to Buffalo, NY to battle the Bulls in league action. Game time is slated for 7:00 p.m.
