OXFORD, Ohio - In its Mid-American Conference opener on Friday evening, Toledo (4-9, 0-1 MAC) dropped a 3-0 (32-30, 30-20, 30-28) decision at Miami (7-8, 0-1 MAC). Junior Rachel Mohler led the Rockets with 11 points and nine kills, while senior Tara Buroker paced the RedHawks with 14 kills and a .370 hitting percentage.
The first game of the match saw 15 ties and six lead changes as the Rockets dropped a hard-fought 32-30 decision. UT was down 29-27 but rallied to tie the contest at 30-30 thanks to a pair of RedHawk service errors and a Mohler kill. Mohler and sophomore middle blocker Corrie Magnus led the Rocket offense with five and four kills, respectively.
Miami opened up a four-point lead, 9-5, in the second game on a strong serving run from junior Kristen Walters. Strong serving expanded that early lead for the RedHawks to seven, 24-17, which forced UT to call a timeout. The RedHawks went on the win the game 30-20 with balanced hitting, .217 (10-5-23), and zero service errors.
Toledo came out strong in the third game jumping out to a 7-3 lead and led 21-17 before the Redhawks tallied six straight points and take a lead it would not relinquish.
"Tonight's match was very competitive and we had a good chance to win both the first and third games," UT Head Coach Kent Miller said. "We need to learn to be more competitive when we have the chance to close out games. Miami is a team that is very much like us, and we need to win these types of matches. We were hurt by some youthful breakdowns and gave up points we shouldn't have."
Mohler was the leading hitter for the Rockets with nine kills and a .238 hitting percentage (9-4-21). Magnus also chipped in with seven kills for Toledo.
UT returns to action tomorrow night with a MAC contest vs. Ball State in Muncie, IN.
