Toledo, OH - Toledo (10-20, 5-10 MAC) dropped a five-game decision (23-30, 30-24, 20-30, 30-27, 15-7) tonight at IPFW (19-9) despite outhitting the host Mastodons by a .185 - .145 margin.
Six Rockets reached double figures in points led by junior outside hitter Rachel Mohler (21 kills, one ace and two block assists) with 23 points. She was followed by sophomore middle blocker Kelsey Culver (10 kills, one ace and seven block assists) with 14.5 points along with sophomore middle blocker Corrie Magnus (nine kills, one ace, one block solo and six block assists) and sophomore right-side hitter Chelsey Poquette (11 kills, one ace and four block assists) with 14 points apiece. Mohler led UT in attack percentage with a .286 mark, respectively, but committed three critical attack errors in the fifth and decisive game.
The Rockets registered a season-high 15.5 blocks in the match with Culver, Magnus and senior setter Carrie McCaw registering seven total blocks apiece. Freshman Kate Bean led the Rockets in digs with a season-high 19, with McCaw leading UT in service aces with five. McCaw also registered 54 assists to give her 3,476 in her career and move her 90 assists away from moving into third place on the Rockets' all-time list. She also moved into fifth place on UT's career service ace list with 138 and needs three more to slide into fourth place.
"This was certainly a match that we were in a position to win," UT Head Coach Kent Miller said. "We played very well in the third game and led throughout much of the fourth game but we couldn't close it out. It's disappointing but we have to rebound and try to finish our regular season strong and get ready for the MAC Tournament."
The Rockets opened the match on fire by hitting .412 in the opening game behind freshman outside hitter Kate Bean (4-0-7 totals for a .571 ATK%) and Mohler (5-1-8 totals for a .500 ATK%). Mohler continued her success in the second game with a .583 ATK (7-0-12) but UT fell off as a team to .154 as it jumped out to a 7-3 lead in the game but couldn't hold it.
The third game saw a return to dominance by the Rockets with .286 team ATK% behind four kills apiece from Poquette (.500 ATK%), Culver (.444 ATK%) and Mohler (.154 ATK%). Mohler also led the Rockets in the fourth game with five kills and a .500 ATK%. UT held a 27-26 lead in that game but saw the Mastodons score the final four points to win the game.
The Rockets jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the fifth game but then saw IPFW tally nine straight points to seal the victory. Toledo returns to action on Friday, Nov. 14 at Northern Illinois for its final regular-season match.
