Joining the Rockets in the fall of 2003 will be catcher Rick Sweeney (Cincinnati, OH/Purcell Marian), right-handed pitcher Matt Meinberg (Cincinnati, OH/Sycamore), catcher Dustin Sommer (Minster, OH/Minster) and outfielder Dawson Chandler (Sylvania, OH/Northview).
"I am very pleased with the players we signed," Kruzel said. "We added quality student-athletes and quality people to our program with this group of recruits. Overall, I think what we set out to do in terms of recruiting we accomplished."
Coach Joe Kruzel's thoughts on each of the 2003-04 recruits:
Rick Sweeney: "Ricky is a big addition for us. We feel he can come in and fill a spot for us behind the plate. He is a fast and strong kid who can also play the outfield. He is a good, solid defensive catcher. Hopefully over the course of time he will be able to fill in right where Mitch (Maier) will leave off."
Matt Meinberg: "Matt is a good, solid pitcher who is very intelligent. He will add depth to our pitching staff. Matt is a very knowledgble pitcher with an outstanding breaking ball. We look for him to come in next year and provide some consistency to our staff."
Dustin Sommer: "Dustin is a big, strong kid. He is a three-sport star in high school, so we know we are getting a pretty good athlete. He throws the ball extremely well behind the plate, and I think over time he will become a very good power hitter."
Dawson Chandler: "Dawson has some pop in his bat. He has the capability of hitting for a high average, driving in some runs and covering a lot of ground in the outfield. With us losing a couple outfielders, he has a real good chance to get some playing time early."
