Toledo, OH - Monte Mathis resigned from his post as an assistant with the men's basketball program at the University of Toledo to accept the position of men's basketball video coordinator at Ohio State University, Toledo Head Coach Stan Joplin announced today.
In his new position, Mathis will be responsible for all men's basketball video duties, in addition to handling film exchange. He also will coordinate the Jim O'Brien summer camps.
"I'm sorry to lose someone like Monte, but this is a great opportunity for him," Joplin said. "We wish him the very best in his future career."
Mathis, a 1991 Toledo graduate, was an assistant at UT for the past four seasons, during which time the Rockets compiled a 65-48 record. Prior to returning to his alma mater, he was an assistant for one season at South Alabama (1995-96) and at McNeese State (1994-95).
Mathis originally enrolled at the University of Kansas in 1985, where he played one season of baseball and basketball. He transferred to UT where he played baseball under Head Coach Stan Sanders from 1987-89 and basketball under Head coach Jay Eck, also from 1987-89. Following his collegiate career, Mathis played minor league baseball for three seasons.
A native of Cincinnati, Mathis graduated from Purcell Marian High School in 1985 where he was the starting point guard and captain of the state champion team as a senior.
Mathis comes from an athletic family. His father, Mike, has been an NBA official for more than 20 years. His brothers Mick, Marty and Brian all played college football.
